Stop Cop City in Atlanta
The City of Atlanta is attempting to push forward the construction of a $90 million police training facility, also known as “Cop City,” despite Atlanta communities and allies across the country actively organizing against its construction.1
Cop City would occupy the critical Weelaunee Forest and have a devastating environmental impact on one of Atlanta’s largest remaining green spaces, located in a predominantly low-income Black area.2 This project is rooted in environmental racism and is a clear example of white supremacist legacies thriving within our nation’s law enforcement institutions.
The project’s initial-phase budget is around $90 million, with $60 million coming from private investors and $30 million coming directly from Atlanta taxpayers.3 We must ask ourselves, what would it look like if those funds were instead invested in publicly-run mental health clinics, after school programs, or even child care to foster crime prevention?
Add your voice and urge investors to immediately withdraw any and all funding to #StopCopCity.
Protests have been ongoing for two years since Atlanta officials announced plans for “Cop City” in 2021 in response to the racial justice uprisings in 2020. More funding to further militarize police does not equate to safer communities. In fact, some of the safest communities across our country are the most affluent and the least policed.4
We can choose to invest in the well-being of our communities or in a police training facility that will only lead to further criminalization and police racist attacks Black and Brown families.
We honor the life of “Tortuguita,” a queer, non-binary, Indigenous Venezuelan who was killed by the police on January 18, 2023 after defending Atlanta’s South River Forest from the construction of this training center.
Urge government and all institutions to immediately withdraw any and all funding from the Atlanta police training facility project.
Stop Cop City! No Police Militarization!
